1989 Geo Metro that gets 75 mpg

An article on the creator and the car here. The car has it’s own site here.
Given that gas in my area is now over four bucks a gallon all this thing needs is a comfy reclining front seat to sleep in.

Too bad people are so obsessed with private transportation. This Geo Metro gets 75mpg, great. For one person. A standard unmodified Geo Metro gets 49mpg, if you’d stuff 2 people in it, it would be the equivalent of two 98mpg-cars. Driver and three passengers? Four 196mpg-cars.
So, sharing rides is THE way of lowering fuel consumed per passenger mile traveled (ultimately: public transport). Okay, it’s not ALWAYS feasible to share, but it’s really depressing just watching cars go by on a highway. Looking at all the solitary drivers, all the people going roughly to the same destinations. All alone. And then complain about gas prices.. Sigh.

Pretty neat. The up side of high gas prices is that more and more people will have to learn to improvise, like we’ve been doing for years. Which basically is good for everyone, in the long run.
I’d like to see somebody design an ultra light, human powered (with electric motor assisted drivetrain for the big hills and headwinds) mini-camper.

Hey,
I’ve been reading your site a bit. I’m losing my job at end of June and thinking of living in a van and taking a tour of the US, doing a blog and podcast, meeting people.
I was wondering if you have any tips on what kind of van to buy? I noticed you said somewhere that a mini-van would be better? Do you still feel that way?
How much do you spend each month on living? Like, how much money do you need to make each month to survive?
Someone suggested to me taking a guitar and playing on street corners. Have you done that? Do you think one could make enough to live and get around?
Sorry for the long comment. you can comment at my blog: jessephillips.wordpress.com
thanks, dude.
